What travellers need for Canada

To enter Canada, travellers use the Canada Electronic Travel Authorization, issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Required for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to, or transiting through, a Canadian airport. Electronically linked to the passport, valid up to five years or until that passport expires, and good for repeated short stays — normally up to six months at a time. Not required when arriving by car, bus, train or boat, including a cruise ship.

What you must satisfy

  • An eTA is needed only when you fly to Canada or transit through a Canadian airport.
  • An eTA covers visa-exempt passports. Yours is not one of them, so you need a visitor visa rather than an eTA.
  • Your passport must still be valid when you arrive in Canada.
  • An eTA normally allows a stay of up to six months at a time.

  • The authorisation is valid for 1825 days.
